Incident Reporting
System

Digital transformation project for the UK’s largest water company. To improve security and experience of an existing pollution incident reporting system.

Background

The Ask

The UK’s largest water company needed to improve the security, and overall user experience of an existing pollution reporting system. A Microsoft model driven power application was the perfect solution for this. Not only being secure, but also being sustainable for the future functionality and improvements.

The digital transformation project needed to be turned around quickly, so the team worked in a very collaborative and agile way, to ensure the clients deadline was met.

Methods

Over 6-week design phase I ran multiple requirement gathering workshops with key stakeholders and users, and we mapped out the solutions currently features and functionality. I then worked closely with the project technical lead to align these features with the model driven power applications capabilities. While doing so I was able to highlight ways of improving current business processes, by using out of the box functionality. Using Microsoft model driven power applications components to create the visual designs for desktop and mobile, the designs were reviewed frequently with key stakeholders, who helped shaped the final application.

At the end of the 6 week design phase the visual designs were able to move into build phase, with a clear direction and set of requirements.

Responsibilities

During the design phase I not only completed my own user experience and visual design tasks, but due to a member of the team having to take two weeks off sick I also stepped in to cover the initial business analyst tasks. This included running multiple requirement gathering workshops with key stakeholders and users of the system to fully understand the current functionality, to then be able to make these to what was possible within a Microsoft model drive power application.

I worked closely with users and stakeholders to also map out the current business process and different touch points for all user types. I was then able to help improve this process by using out of the box functionality to save the business time while conducting different tasks within the system.

Workshops

Using design thinking methods I conducted a range of different workshops with the client, starting with requirements gathering, where we looked at the current systems functionality and the processes used.
I was then able to map out the different users types and flows before moving into design where I worked closely with the technical lead to make sure all the business requirements were met.

Visual Design

The visual design was created using Microsoft model driven power application templates, with the company branded added in to key elements, such as the header bar, call to actions etc... The designs also meet WCAG level AA for accessibility.

High-Fidelity Designs: The high-fidelity designs were created for desktop and mobile another key improvement to the current system which only worked on desktop, while the new Microsoft model driven power application is a responsive solution.

Project Feedback

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your hard work on PIRs the designs have landed really well with the client and with the client account team. Im grateful for your calm and engaging manner which I believe has given the client a great introduction to Powerapps, also stepping in when the BA was off for a while.”

Thank you for your interest in my work!
